1930's Harmony Supertone (SOLD $675.00 USD)
Project type
Vintage Guitar Restoration
I think this is a late 30’s early 40’s Harmony Supertone, but I don’t know for sure. When I purchased it several years ago it had the Bruno label on the headstock. I don’t believe this is original to the guitar, but it could be some sort of prototype. What I do know is that this guitar plays and sounds amazing and its almost identical to another guitar I know to be a Supertone. So I'm calling it a Supertone, but if you think/know different let me know.
The finish is old and beutiful. There are a few cracks that have been cleated to prevent spread, but I like the vibe of the finish so I chose not to refinish and just secure the cracks and polish the affected area. The back, sides, neck, and headstock are all solid and have no visible cracks. There is finish wear, but nothing that hurts playability.
Super resonant guitar. You can feel the top vibrate as chords ring. It’s got good balance for a smaller (I think 00) sized body. The body is slightly larger than a parlor guitar and the neck meets the body at the 14th fret instead of the 12th, providing a bit more range.
I love the necks on these old 30’s Harmony guitars. Chucky Soft V (although this one is on the smaller side) very comfortable neck, with a rosewood fretboard and new medium steel frets from StewMac. This guitar did require a neck reset that has been completed and now plays well up and down the fretboard. Also upgraded the nut, and saddle to custom made bone and added matching bone bridge pins with abalone inlay.
The tuners are not original, but seem to be period correct. They work as expected.
This guitar is almost 100 years old. There is nothing like old wood. If you’re looking for a 00 sized guitar and considering buying new I urge you to reconsider and check out one of these refurbished and upgraded guitars. They are significantly better than new guitars in the same price range … plus, they come with built in mojo!
This is one of my favorites. I’ll be sad to see it go, but confident the next owner will enjoy and care for it just as I have over the years. I've listed it as "very good" condition given thats its almost 100 years old and in very good playing condition.
